Pulling In (Arrival & First Impressions)

Convoy was busy, parking took effort, and the room was loud — none of that was unexpected. What stood out early was how quickly the staff seemed overwhelmed. From the start, the dining room felt disengaged, and that tone carried through the entire visit.

Tajima operates multiple locations across San Diego and beyond, which brings an expectation of consistency. On this visit, the experience felt more like a system under strain than a single busy night.

Reading the Signs (Ordering & Menu Navigation)

Ordering was straightforward, but the interaction was cold. There was no guidance, no friendliness, and little acknowledgment beyond taking the order. The table felt ignored early, and that feeling never really went away.

Hitting the Table (Food, Pacing & Flavor)

The food showed up doing its job.

The ramen delivered solid depth and richness, with the red ramen anchoring the meal. The katsu curry and pork chashu fried rice were filling and satisfying, while the appetizers gave the table something to share and work through together.

Service detracted from the experience. Plates arrived with long gaps, and when they did arrive, they were dropped abruptly. Dishes were slammed onto the table rather than set down, and there was no follow-up once the food landed.

Comfort Check (The Little Things That Matter)

Noise and crowding were part of the environment, but the larger issue was how seating and service were handled. We were placed at a large shared square table without being given a choice. Waiting a few extra minutes for a separate table would have been preferable, but that option was never offered.

While seated, cleaning chemicals were sprayed near the table — twice — as staff cleaned the surrounding area. The spraying was close enough to affect both smell and taste, with no warning, pause, or acknowledgment despite diners actively eating.

Service interactions were minimal and awkward. Two drinks were refilled just before empty, but silently, without any check-in. No one asked how the meal was going or whether anything was needed. Utensils were not offered, and the assumption appeared to be that chopsticks were sufficient. A fork had to be retrieved separately, without assistance.

The Sweet Exit (Dessert & Wrap-Up)

Checkout offered no recovery. There was no acknowledgment of the issues, no attempt to smooth the experience, and no sense that the visit mattered once the food was served.

Return Factor (Dead End, U-Turn, or Express Lane?)

This visit lands firmly in Dead End territory. The food alone wasn’t enough to overcome the service, and there was no indication that a return visit would be different.
